Ich bin begeistert von Familiengeschichten und bin eher zufällig auf dieses Buch gestoßen. Chinese-Canadian Migrantenliteratur ist äußert spannend und Chong's Familienvergangenheit ist einzigartig.
the book is immensely valuable as a document of family history, but unfortunately it blatantly exploits the rich chinese culture and serves it up to white audiences as a curious existence full of superstitions and chinoiserie. hence, the meaningless accolades from the lily white literary world. her story is remarkable, but in the grander context, pretty common in the chinese-american/canadian immigrant narrative...it would have been much better if she just stuck to the story,( which is powerful enough in itself) without the endless chinese in quotations to lend the writing a false sense of credibility. furthermore, the title in and of itself exploits the sexualized image of the asian woman, so she can sell more books, when in fact, may-ying's character was not merely a concubine(and all that entails in the western context), but ms. chong fails to realize all the loaded messages the usage of that word conjures up. not to mention arousing all the prurient interests of curious white men looking for their subservient lotus-blossoms.. all of which further serves to marginalize and exoticize a culture, whose main problem is overcoming its perpetual image as strange and other...
Denise Chong has done a remarkable job of reconstructing her family's history and telling about it and the conditions under which they lived. She is non-judgmental as to how and why her grandmother, among many occupations, was also a prostitute. These Chinese immigrants were not presented as victims of their situation, but you can see why they had to struggle with survival. The story includes some description of the sociological conditions. I'm extremely glad she was able to include photographs. Not only was the life and challenges of the Chinese immigrants to North America described, but also conditions in China. Denise and her mother traveled to the remote village in China where her mother's uncle still lives.I strongly recommend this to anyone interested in the immigration experience, Chinese immigration in particular, the social changes in China in the 20th century, and even to help imagine what your ancestors of any ethnic group may have gone through.
I had just read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See when I found this book. The Concubine's Children made China come alive knowing she was writing about actual people and those still living while she was doing her research. If you want to understand the history involving Chinese families and the culture, this is one not to miss. She made it all come alive especially with the family photos that you could refer back to when a new person was introduced or she was describing the home her father built.
I couldn't wait to read this book after it arrived. But I was disappointed. Althought the topic was fascinating, the writing was not. I became bored and at times found it hard to follow which person was doing what. I had to re-read some paragraphs to make sure I knew which person I was reading about. If the writing had been better, it would have been a far more captivating book. Falling Leaves: The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter was much better.
This book provides an intimate look at life of Chinese immigrants over the last century and at China under Mao. It is well-written and enjoyable to read.
A very good book if you are interested in the history of the Chinese in North America. The book is like new and arrived within 1 week.
